1.11.14 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Win 5th Straight; DuPont Nets Career-High in Rout Ferris State

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (10-2, 6-2) exploded for 53 second half points, on their way to a 94-71 GLIAC win over visiting Ferris State University (6-6, 5-3) today. The win was the fifth straight for the Cavs, who lead the GLIAC South Division by one game. The Cavs now hit the road next week to Ashland University and Lake Erie College. The Cavs meet the Eagles in Ashland on Thursday at 7:30 pm, and play at Lake Erie next Saturday at 3 pm. The remainder of the schedule is against South Division opponents. Both games will be broadcast live on WNPQ, 95.9 FM.
Walsh snapped a 25-all tie with a 16-8 run the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 41-33 lead into the locker room at halftime. Brad DuPont (6-0, Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) had 11 of his career-high 21 points in the first half, and Trey Fletcher (6-6, Fr., Ironton, OH/HS) netted 8 of his 20 points.
The Cavs came out of the gate quickly in the second half, and increased the lead to 16 points at 52-36 in the first two minutes and thirty seconds. They would hold the double digit lead until Ferris State trimmed the lead to 69-60 with 8:42 left.
The Bulldogs would rally and trim the lead to nine points again, at 76-67, with 5:21 to play but would get no closer.
The Walsh lead escalated to 18 points when a personal and technical foul on Milton Cribbs resulted in a seven-point play for Walsh to extend the lead to 85-67 with 4:05 to play. The final margin proved to be Walsh’s largest lead.
DuPont hit 7-9 shots from the floor, and was 4-5 from three-point. In his last three games, DuPont has gone 10-15 (67%) from behind the arc. He also grabbed five rebounds. Fletcher matched his career-high point total with his 20-point effort. The lefty was 9-13 from the field. He also grabbed five rebounds.
Jesse Hardin (6-1, So., Warren, OH/Hardin) added 15 points and a Walsh high 6 rebounds, and Zac Carter (5-9, Fr., Ironton, OH/HS) chipped in 14 points.
Walsh shot 54% for the game and 63% (19-30) in the second half.
