1.13.13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lake Erie Hands Cavaliers 66-54 Defeat

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Visiting Lake Erie earned its first conference win and handed Walsh its fifth consecutive loss with a 66-54 decision at Alumni Arena. The Cavaliers fall to 4-9 overall and 1-8 in the conference. The Storm improve to 3-9 overall and are now even with the Cavs at 1-8 in the GLIAC.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead by scoring the first five points of the game, but the Cavaliers were able to go on a 14-3 run midway through the half to take a six-point lead at 22-16 with 8:39 remaining in the first half. However, Lake Erie answered by scoring 15 of the next 16 points to take the lead for good. At halftime, Walsh was down 38-29.
In the second half, Lake Erie remained in command and led by as many as 15. The Cavs were able to cut that lead down to seven with the last such difference coming at 59-52 after a layup by Tracy Payne (Sr., Sr., 5-5,Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) with 4:12 remaining on the clock. The Storm then capped off the game on a 7-2 run.
Payne paced the Cavaliers with 13 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Lydia Corle (Fr., 5-9, North Canton, OH/Green) also reached double figures with 12 points. Whitney Dabbelt (So., 6-0, West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) was a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Lake Erie’s Ashar Harris led all-scorers with 20 points and 15 boards.
The Cavaliers will attempt to rebound on the road at Ohio Dominican this Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on WNPQ 95.9 and Teamline.
