Women's Basketball, 2014-01-16

(ASHLAND, Ohio) - In its first game against GLIAC South competition, Walsh battled defending national champion Ashland, but couldn’t handle the Eagles (8-5, 6-3) on the road and fell 73-64. The Cavaliers (5-10, 1-8) were remained competitive for the entire game and didn’t trail by more than a single possession until late in the game.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 9-2 lead after a Tara Gallupe (Sr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) scored a 3-pointer just 3:26 into the game. The momentum carried through as Walsh held the lead for the majority of the first half. At halftime, the Cavs saw themselves up 30-26.

Walsh kept the pressure high at the start of the second half with an 11-3 run to go up 41-29 after another bonus bomb by Gallupe with 15:42 remaining. It was at that time that Ashland began a 16-4 run to get back into the game and took a two-point lead.

The next couple of minutes saw the lead exchange hands four times before Ashland started to separate itself and jump ahead. After a Kelsey Funderburg (So., North Lewisburgh, OH/Triad/Morehead State) brought Walsh within one with 4:11 to play, the Cavs were outscored 16-8 the rest of the way.

Despite the loss, Gallupe had a strong game with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field with seven rebounds to lead the Cavs’ offense. Funderburgh backed her up with 13 points, five assists, and five steals as the only other Walsh player in double figures.

Walsh will be back in action when the Cavs travel to Painesville to take on Lake Erie on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
