1.17.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Daemen Downs Cavs 58-54
Women's Basketball, 2012-01-17
A 22-point effort by Tracy Payne (Jr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) was not enough as hosting Walsh fell to conference rival Daemen 58-54 Tuesday evening. The Wildcats (15-4, 6-0) remain unbeaten in the AMC and have swept the season series with the Cavaliers (8-10, 5-3).
The game was close throughout as neither team led by more than seven points in the game. That advantage was held by Walsh with 5:23 to play during a three-point play following a layup by Daniella Ciccarone (So., 5-8, Quakertown, PA/Community Senior) and free throw that made the score 50-43. Daemen answered by going on a 15-4 run to close out the game.
The Wildcats largest lead was six, 28-22, that came at the end of the first half. Payne then sparked the Cavaliers’ offense with 14 of her 22 points coming in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Overall she was 9-23 from the field, including 4-10 from behind the arc. All four of her bonus bombs came during that 10 minute stretch in the second half. Payne also played well on the defensive end with six rebounds and three steals.
No other players scored in double-figures for Walsh. Ciccarone finished with nine points and five rebounds and was perfect from the charity stripe going 7-7. Megan Hogg (Fr., 6-0, Waukee, IA/HS/Northwest Missouri State) led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Cavs return to action Thursday as they travel a few miles down the road to take on Malone in the Mayor’s Cup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
