Women's Basketball, 2013-01-17

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Cavaliers broke a five-game skid and won their second conference game with a 69-59 over hosting Ohio Dominican at Alumni Hall Thursday evening. Walsh (5-9, 2-8) had an extra reason to celebrate as Tracy Payne (Sr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) scored her 1,000thcareer point. The Panthers (4-10, 1-10) were a half-game behind Walsh entering the contest.

Payne matched fellow Walsh senior Kenny Kornowski, who scored his 1,000th point in the men’s game against, by reaching the plateau on a basket with 4:26 left in the first half to tie the game at 26-26. She finished with a team-high 15 points with three 3-pointers.

Audrey Badovick (So., 5-5, Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) had the best game of her collegiate career as she matched Payne with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Her previous career high was six points.

Both teams were neck-and-neck for most of the game before Walsh took the lead for good after a 3-pointer by Payne made it 52-49 with 10:28 left in the game. The Cavs finished the game strong on a 15-5 run.

Both teams were even on rebounds at 34, but Walsh pulled down 15 offensive caroms that translated into 18 second chance points compared to ODU’s five. Whitney Dabbelt (So., 6-0, West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) was a main reason for that as she finished with 14 rebounds, eight offensively. The Cavs also held the advantage on fast-break points 14-6.

Lydia Corle (Fr., 5-9, North Canton, OH/Green) also reached double-figures for the fourth-straight game with 11 points. Kacee Hockenberry paced the Panthers with 22 points, 18 of which came in the first half.

The Cavaliers will attempt to keep the momentum rolling as they host Tiffin this Saturday at 3 p.m. following the men’s game. The game will be broadcast on Teamline.
