1.19.13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Tame Dragons 71-65

Women's Basketball, 2013-01-19

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Walsh capped a perfect weekend of basketball with a 71-65 victory over visiting Tiffin University Saturday afternoon in GLIAC action. The Cavaliers (6-9, 3-8) won their second consecutive conference game, while the Dragons (8-8, 5-7) split the weekend.

After scoring 15 points at Ohio Dominican for a career-high on Thursday, Audrey Badovick (So., 5-5, Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) matched that feat with another 15-point performance this afternoon. She shot 5-of-9, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, with 10 points coming in the second half.

It was an evenly matched game for the majority of the contest as neither team held a lead larger than six until late in the game. The Cavs were on the positive end of that difference after going up 65-56 for their largest lead of the game following a 3-pointer by Tracy Payne (Sr., Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) with 1:40 remaining.  True to fashion of the rest of the game, the Dragons came back with a pair of threes in the next minute to cut the deficit to 65-62. However, Walsh made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

The Cavs were strong from the charity stripe through the afternoon as they made 12 out of 15 shots. They were also on fire from the perimeter as they made 7-of-10 3-pointers. In addition to Badovick, Payne and Maggie Berry (Jr., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) each made a pair against one miss. Payne finished with 14, while Berry scored 10 points with seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Lydia Corle (Fr., 5-9, North Canton, OH/Green) also scored in double figures with 11 points. Whitney Dabbelt (So., 6-0, West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) also had a strong game with 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Jordan Fraley scored a game-high 23 points for the Dragons.

Walsh returns to action at home against Findlay on Thursday at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Teamline.
