Women's Basketball, 2014-01-02
(DETROIT) - It was a rough day for Walsh as its first game of the new year resulted in a 79-57 loss to host Wayne State on Thursday evening. The Cavaliers (5-5, 1-4) and Warriors (8-1, 5-0) tipped of 35 minutes later than scheduled due to inclement weather.
The Cavaliers battled in the early part of the game, but after Tara Gallupe (Sr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) made a jumper that made the score 13-12 in favor of Wayne State with 13:44 left in the opening half, the tone of the game changed as the Warriors went on a massive run. The hosts scored the next 14 points in just under eight minutes of game time. Jalynn Graham (Fr., 5-5, Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) finally put Walsh back into the scoring column with a layup, but Wayne State was able to keep control and went into the break with a 35-20 lead.
Walsh didn’t give up and made a run in the second stanza despite being down 20 at one point. Midway through the half, Gallupe came up big with a 3-pointer to make it 55-44 with 9:49 to play, but the Cavs couldn’t bring the deficit to single digits.
Gallupe had a big game for the Cavs as she finished with 18 points. She was 7-of-13 from the field and pulled down six rebounds. Graham was impressive in her return to the lineup after battling an injury as she recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Wayne State’s Imari Redfield could not be stopped as she scored a game-high 30 points on 13-of-16 from the field. Shareta Brown added 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting with 15 rebounds.
Overall, the Cavs shot 34 percent from the field.
The Cavs will stay in Michigan and return to action at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
