1.21.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Hold On To Trip Cedarville; Sutton Tallied 24 Points

(North Canton, OH) Walsh (17-3) won its fifth straight game, with a thrilling 73-72 triumph over Cedarville University (10-7) today. The Cavs completed a 3-0 week and and have a stretch of four games in eight days. They are back in action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Wilberforce University for an American Mideast Conference game at 7:30 pm. The game will be broadcast live on NewsTalk 640 AM WHLO.
Walsh shot 50% in the first half and led 37-31 at the break. Cedarville built a four-point lead at 12-8 before the Cavs took control. Walsh built a 12-point lead at 35-23 with 5:37 to play in the half, but watched as the Yellow Jackets trimmed the lead to 37-31 at the half. L. J. Sutton (6-7, Sr., Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) paced the Cavs with 13 first half points.
Walsh built the lead back to eight points (41-33) early in the second half, and kept the Jackets at bay for most of the half. It looked as if the Cavs were going to run away when they built a 69-59 lead with 5:10 to play. Cedarville then went on a quick 7-0 run to trim the margin to 69-66 with 3:03 to play. They then outscored the Cavs 6-2, and took the lead at 72-71 on an Austin Foote three-pointer with 1:32 left.
Walsh scored the games’ final points on a Brad DuPont (6-0, So., Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) hoop (goal tending call) with 1:20 left. The Cavs missed a chance to extend the lead when Ron Kinney (6-7, Sr., Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) failed to convert the front half of a one-and-one with 25 seconds to play. The Yellow Jackets gained possession and advanced the ball and called timeout with 7.7 seconds left. After the inbounds pass, the Cavs kept Cedarville from getting a shot and forced a loose ball in the lane as time ran out.
Sutton led the Cavs with a career-high 24 points. L. J. shot 9-16 from the floor and led the Cavs with seven rebounds. Kinney added 18 points and DuPont tallied 11, and handed out a game-high seven assists.
Zimmy Nwogbo led Cedarville with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Austin Foote added 17 points.
The two teams meet at Cedarville on February 11.
