Men's Basketball, 2014-01-23
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) On the strength of a 26-0 run, Walsh (12-3, 8-3) got back into the win column with an 82-54 rout of Ohio Dominican University (4-11, 2-9) in a GLIAC contest at Alumni Arena tonight. The win was career win number 254 for head coach Jeff Young (254-55, 10th yr.), and ties him with Steve Loy (254-130, 12 yrs.) for the most wins in Walsh coaching history. Young can pass Loy on the all-time list if the Cavs win at Tiffin University on Saturday. The 3 pm tip-off will be broadcast live on WNPQ FM, 95.9. Tonight’s win also keeps the Cavs tied for first place in the GLIAC South with the University of Findlay, who defeated Ashland University tonight.
Walsh led 28-23 with 5:16 to play in the first half, when they closed the half with a 16-0 run to lead 44-23 at the break. The Cavs would then score the first 10 points of the second half to increase their lead to 54-23.
Everybody played, as Walsh shot 50% (30-60) from the field, and out-rebounded the Panthers 42-32. Brad DuPont (6-0, Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Hardin (6-1, So., Warren, OH/Harding) also scored 16 points, connecting on 6-10 from the field. Davonte Beard (6-2, Jr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary/Siena) added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
The Cavs limited the Panthers to just 17-55 from the floor (31%) and 5-18 (28%) from three-point. Mark Minch led ODU, and all scorers, with 22 points.
