1.24.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Upset at Wilberforce in Overtime

Hosting Wilberforce upset Walsh by a score of 82-77 in an AMC game Tuesday evening. It was the Bulldogs’ (8-14, 4-2) first win over the Cavaliers (17-4, 6-2) in 15 meetings and fourth overall in the 22 games between the two schools.

The two teams battled back and forth with Walsh forcing the overtime period after Ryan Vanderhorst (So., 6-3, New Knoxville, OH/HS) hit a three to notch the score at 70-70. The score was also tied at halftime 34-34. The Cavs took the lead on another three by Brad DuPont (So., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) but couldn’t get shots to fall down the stretch as they were 2-9 for the final five minutes.

Reigning AMC Player of the Week Ron Kinney (Sr., 6-7, Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) led the Cavaliers with a double-double performance as he scored 19 points and pulled down 12 boards. He shot 7-18 from the field. Rian Burrell (Fr., 6-3, Zanesville, OH/HS) added 16 points and L.J. Sutton (Sr., 6-7, Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) scored 14 points to round out the double-figure players for Walsh.

The Cavs were out-rebounded 50-42. Neither team led by more than seven points during the contest.

Wilberforce visits Walsh Thursday, Feb. 16. The Cavs return to action against Houghton this Saturday. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
