1.3.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Win Shootout With Pioneers; DuPont Records Triple-Double
Men's Basketball, 2012-01-03
Walsh downed Point Park 90-87 in action Tuesday afternoon in a battle for first place of the American Mideast Conference. The Cavaliers (12-2, 3-0) remained unbeaten in league play while the Pioneers (7-6, 1-1) fell in their second conference game of the season.
The tightly contested game had its fair share of flashy play by individuals. Brad DuPont (So., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) recorded the Cavaliers' second triple-double in school history with an 11-point, 12-rebound, and 15-assist performance. The only other Cavaliers player to pull off the feat was current graduate assistant coach Jeremy Shardo when he scored 12 points, made 11 assists, and pulled down 13 boards in an 85-47 Mayor's Cup win over Malone in 2008.
DuPont had plenty of options to pass to as well. Rian Burrell (Fr., 6-3, Zanesville, OH/HS) dropped 31 points on Point Park on 10-20 shooting from the field, including five 3-pointers. Ron Kinney (Sr., 6-7, Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) also had an impressive night with 22 points on 9-19 from the field.
The Cavaliers led throughout the game and by as many as 12. Point Park's T.J. Heatherington, who led all scorers with 37 points, attempted a game-tying three at the buzzer, but it came short of the rim.
Walsh will next be in action on Saturday as the Cavs travel to New York to play Daemen in AMC action. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
