1.3.13 MEN' S BASKETBALL: Cavs Hold On for Road GLIAC Win at Grand Valley

(Allendale, MI) Davonte Beard's (6-2, So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary/Siena) three-point play snapped a 79-79 tie with 43 seconds to play and lifted Walsh (7-3, 3-3) to a 83-79 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win at Grand Valley State University (8-3, 5-2) tonight.  The win snapped a three-game GLIAC losing streak for the Cavs.  Walsh will now take their two-game win streak to Ferris State University on Saturday.  Game time is 1 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on 95.9 WNPQ.

Walsh used a 22-7 run to close the first half and led 43-38 at the half.  The Cavs would shoot 58% in the second half and turned the ball over just one time in the final 14 minutes to help setup the win. 

Walsh led throughout the second half and led by as many as seven points.  Grand Valley finally caught the Cavs and took the lead at 77-76 with 1:20 to play.  Rian Burrell (6-3, So.,Zanesville, OH/HS) spilt two free throws to tie game with 1:06 to play, before two Tony Peters free throws gave GVSU their final lead at 79-77 with 47 seconds to play.  Beard then drove the floor for a layup, and drew the foul to give the Cavs the lead for good.

The Cavs then rebounded a miss by Ryan Sabin and added to the lead on two Beard free throws, and two more by Kenny Kornowski (6-9, Sr., Marshallville, OH/Smithville) to ice the win.

Kornowski led all scorers with 24 points. He was 9-14 from the floor and added five rebounds.  The Cavs balanced attack produced four others in double figure scoring.  Beard scored 13 points to go with 7 assists and 6 rebounds.  Burrell added 11 points and Jeff Copeland (6-5, So., Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit) and Hrvoje Vucic (7-1, Jr., Split, Croatia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) had 10 each.  Vucic added a game-high 9 rebounds.  Copeland also added six rebounds.  Walsh out rebounded the Lakers 39-28.
