1.31.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Win Third Straight

Women's Basketball, 2012-01-31

Walsh held on to defeat visiting Carlow by a count of 58-52 in an American Mideast Conference game Tuesday evening. The Cavaliers (12-11, 8-3) have now won three straight games for the first time this season, and snapped the Celtics (10-10, 3-6) modest two game streak in doing so.

The Cavaliers played well for the first half and closed out the initial 20 minutes on a strong 9-0 run to go into the locker room with a 37-18 lead. The Cavs held a comfortable lead for the majority of the second half until Carlow made a run with 7:33 to go. It was at that point that the Celtics started a 10-1 run to make the score 49-43 with 3:55 remaining.  Walsh answered with a three –pointer by Megan Hogg (Fr., 6-0, Waukee, IA/HS/NW Missouri State) followed by a jumper by Mandi Swickard (Sr., 6-1, Alexandria, OH/Northridge) to go back up by 11. Carlow didn’t get back within six points until making a three-pointer with a few seconds left.

Hogg led the Cavs with 13 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Kristi Yoder (Sr., 6-1, Millersburg, OH/Hiland) added 12 points on 5-11 from the field. Tara Gallupe (So., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) was the final Cavs’ player to reach double-figures with 10 points and added eight rebounds to the cause.

Walsh returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Urbana in a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
