1.5.13 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Fall in Final Seconds at Ferris State

Men's Basketball, 2013-01-05

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second game in row, Walsh battled down to the wire, but could not top hosting Ferris State as the Bulldogs won 70-68. Ferris State (6-6, 5-3) was able to make a layup with five seconds remaining to down the Cavaliers (7-4, 3-4)

It was a close game throughout as neither side held a lead larger than seven. That advantage belonged to the Bulldogs with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, but a pair of 3-pointers by Ryan Vanderhorst (Jr., 6-3, New Knoxville, OH/HS) put the Cavaliers helped keep the Cavaliers close. Down the stretch, Ferris State held a four-point lead at 68-64. Rian Burrell (So., 6-3, Zanesville, OH/HS) scored on a jumper and Davonte Beard (So., 6-2, Akron, OH/SVSM/Siena) sunk a pair of free throws to tie the game with 1:17 remaining. Both teams missed shots to take the lead before Drew Lehman’s layup in the final seconds.

Second-chance points were important to the Bulldogs as they pulled down 14 offensive rebounds that transfered into 17 points compared to three points on three offensive boards for the Cavaliers.

Burrell led the Cavs’ attack with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-13 from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds. Kenny Kornowski (Sr., 6-9, Marshallville, OH/Smithville) continued to be a force with another double-double on 15 points and 13 rebounds. Vanderhorst also reached double figures with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting that included four 3-pointers.

Walsh returns to Alumni Arena with games against Ashland and Lake Erie this week. The Cavaliers host the Eagles on Thursday at 6 p.m. They will then host the Storm on Saturday, whiteout t-shirt giveaway day, at 1 p.m. The games will be live on 95.9 WNPQ and Teamline.
