10.1.11 FOOTBALL: Cavs Upset Bid of No. 3 Marian Falls Short
Walsh fell short in its upset bid of NAIA No. 3 Marian University by a score of 20-13 at St. V Health Field in Indianapolis Saturday afternoon. The Knights (6-0, 1-0) jutted out to a 20-0 first half lead, but the Cavaliers (1-4) made a valiant comeback attempt with a pair of touchdowns and shutting the Marian offense down in the second half.
The Knights struck first with a 39-yard field goal by Mike Josifovski with 9:16 remaining in the first quarter. They followed that up with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Adam Wiese to Tevin Lake to make it 10-0. Marian pushed its lead to 20 in the second quarter with another field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run by Nick Bradford.
The Cavs' eventually cut into that lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by Jack Dawson (So., 6-2, 191, Columbiana, OH/South Range) to make the score 20-6 after the failed point-after attempt. The touchdown was set up by a sack and fumble by Marian's quarterback recovered by Maurice Jones (Jr., 5-10, 218, Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) on Marian's 12-yard line. Steve Smith added the second touchdown for Walsh on a 1-yard run to cap off a 13 play, 48 yard drive with 12:04 remaining in the fourth quarter. Walsh couldn't find the end zone after that as Marian went on to run out the clock to prevent the upset.
Toba Olarewaju (Jr., 5-10, 191, Youngstown, OH/Christian) led the Cavs in rushing with 58 yards on 16 attempts before going out with an injury. Smith finished with 25 yards on 12 carries. Jim Shiplett (Sr., 6-3, 199, Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) was 8-24 for 89 yards. Defensively, the Cavs limited Marian to 222 total yards.
Walsh returns home next Saturday to host NAIA No. 2 St. Francis (Ind.) after three weeks on the road. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. The game can be heard live on News-Talk 640 WHLO and will be streamed live on www.whlo640.com and Teamline for video.
