10.1.13 VOLLEYBALL: Cavs Snap Skid; Down Malone in Four

Women's Volleyball, 2013-10-01

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (4-8, 1-4) snapped a four-game skid, and recorded their first GLIAC win by defeating rival Malone University (7-6, 2-3) in four sets at Alumni Arena.  The Cavs are back in action this weekend, when they travel to Michigan for a pair of GLIAC matches. On Friday, they meet Northwood University at 7 pm, and then play at Hillsdale College on Saturday at 2 pm.

Walsh rallied from deficits of 6-1 and 17-11 to win the first set 25-23. With Devin Hummel (5-8, So., Shelby, OH/HS) serving, the Cavs went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead at 18-17. Malone regained the lead at 21-20, before a 3-0 Walsh run gave them the lead for good.  Kelsey Snider (5-10, So., Olmsted Falls, OH/HS) had five kills in the first set.

Malone led from start to finish in evening the match with a 25-19 win in the second set. The Pioneers jumped to a 6-1 lead, and led 10-3 and 14-7 before the Cavs mounted a rally. Walsh would close to within three points at 21-18, but would get no closer.

Walsh rallied from an early deficit, and then two matches points, to win the third set 29-27 to take a 2-1 lead. Malone snapped a 7-7 tie with a 5-0 run to take their largest lead of the set at 12-7. Walsh would answer and eventually tie the match at 21, and take the lead on a Paige Chandler (6-0, Sr., Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) kill at 22-21. Malone would then take leads of 26-25 and 27-26, but could not put Walsh away due to big kills from Snider and Krissy Sokol (5-9, Sr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban).  A Chandler kill gave Walsh a 28-27 lead, and a Malone attack error gave Walsh the set, and a 2-1 match lead.

The third set was tight throughout, with the last tie coming at 12-12. Walsh took the lead for good at 13-12, but never led by more than three points the remainder of the match. A Sokol kill at 24-23 gave the Cavs the set win (25-23), and their first GLIAC win of the season.

Snider led Walsh with 15 kills and 18 digs. Chandler added 13 kills and 11 digs and Sokol 11 kills. Freshman setter Haley Howell (5-11, Clarkston, MI/Our Lady of the Lakes) handed out 41 assists.

Malone was led by Taylor Slauterbeck’s 15 kills.
