10.11.13 MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Take Down Northwood 1-0
Men's Soccer, 2013-10-11
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Set plays have been a strong suit for Walsh all season and it proved to be a pivotal part tonight’s 1-0 win over Northwood. The only goal of the game came on a long throw in by the Cavaliers (4-6, 4-4) late in the first half. The loss drops the Timberwolves to 4-5 overall and 4-4 in the GLIAC.
The goal was scored by Quebec Gibbins (Jr., 5-10, Canton, OH/Jackson) when Adam Gonia (Fr., 5-11, Sylvania, OH/Northview) gave a lengthy throw-in from the right side of the field. The ball sailed to the middle of the eight-yard box where Gibbins was waiting. Gibbins was able to flick it in on the first touch at 42:12
Justin Nolan (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/Highland) pitched the clean sheet with four saves on 16 shots faced. The saves didn’t come easy as he made three back-to-back-to-back in the 74thminute as Northwood was mounting pressure in its comeback bid for the equalizer. Nolan was able to keep all three shots out before the defense finally cleared. His other save also came in the second half.
The win currently places Walsh in a three-way tie for fourth place in the GLIAC standings along with Northwood and Lake Erie. The Cavs and Timberwolves have split the season series and host Lake Erie on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Cavaliers return to action when they host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The game will follow the women’s soccer game and Jersey Roar event against Ashland at 1 p.m. All Walsh student-athletes are encouraged to wear their game jerseys or warm-ups.
