10.12-13 FOOTBALL: Cavs Snaps Skid; Tops Malone Malone 38-28
(CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (2-4, 2-3) led from start to finish and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-28 over Malone (0-6, 0-5) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. The win also enables Walsh to keep possession of the Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy. The Cavs have won the last five meetings with Malone and lead the all-time series 13-6.
Walsh scored first when Paul Kempe (Jr., Ursuline, OH/HS) tossed a three-year TD pass to Jerald Robinson (Jr., Canton, OH/South/Michigan) at the 12:29 mark of the first quarter.
Malone answered on a five-yard run by Bryce Pratt to tie the game with 1:14 to play in the first period.
Walsh regained the lead early in the second quarter when Steve Smith (Sr., Norton, OH/HS) scored on a 14-yard run. Smith finished the day with 77 yards rushing. Malone's Justin Davis then scored on a three-yard run to tie the game (14-14) with 7:59 to play in the first half. The game was tied at the half.
Walsh took the lead at the 10:14 of the third period when Krishawn Hogan (Fr., Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) caught a 10-yard TD pass from Kempe. Malone answered and tied the game for the final time with 6:58 to play in the third when quarterback Will Szpor scored on a 30-yard run.
Walsh took the lead for good at the 2:44 mark of the third when Smith caught a 12-yard TD pass from Kempe. It was Kempe's third TD pass of the day.
Walsh scored early in the fourth (13:44) when Pat White (Jr., Cambridge, OH/Pickerington Central) picked off a Szpor pass and raced 81 yards to pay dirt to extend the Cavs' lead to 35-21. Walsh then added a field goal from Michael Dudics (Jr.,Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) with 4:37 to play to up their lead to 38-21.
Malone came right back, when they returned a short kick inside the Walsh five-yard line, and then scored on a four-yard run from Bryce Pratt. Walsh then ran out the clock to secure the win.
Kempe completed 20-30 passes for 203 yards. He also rushed for 36 yards. Walsh rushed for a season-high 226 yards, led by Aaron Male (R-Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet), who gained a career-best 111 yards on 15 carries. Smith caught six passes for 47 yards and Darryl Gary (Jr., Fort Myers, FL/South Ft. Myers) five passes for 72 yards.
Cameron Trudell led (Jr., Columbus, OH/Walnut Ridge) Walsh with 13 tackles. CJ Chatman (So., Copley, OH/HS) added 11 and recovered a fumble.
Walsh is home for Ashland, at Fawcett Stadium, next Saturday at 12 pm. The game will be broadcast live on 95.9 FM, WNPQ.
