10.13.12 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Peskura's Pair of Goals Puts Cavs Past Pioneers

Women's Soccer, 2012-10-13

Two goals by Erin Peskura (Fr., 5-4, Strongsville, OH/HS) made it a perfect week for Walsh as it went on to defeat rival Malone 3-1 in GLIAC action. The Cavaliers, who also defeated Cedarville on Thursday, are now 7-4-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the conference. The Pioneers drop to 1-10-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the GLIAC.

Both teams battled shot for shot early in the game, but Carley Adams (Sr., 5-8, Louisville, OH/HS) was able to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead in the 28thminute. Molly Martin (Sr., 5-7, Canfield, OH/HS) provided the assist as she dribbled up the center of the field before passing off to Adams on the right. Adams swiftly booted it on goal where it bounced off the goalkeeper’s hands and into the right side of the net.

The Cavaliers went up by two 10 minutes later as Peskura scored her first goal of the game on a rebounded shot by Jessie Gearhart (Fr., 5-9, Wadsworth, OH/HS). Gearhart placed a shot on goal from the left side that was initially saved, but the ball ricocheted out to the center of the box. Peskura was waiting and promptly put the ball in the open net. Peskura score the Cavs’ final goal after stealing a misplayed ball off of a Malone defender and beat the goalie one-on-one in the 71stminute.

Walsh was close to recording another shutout, but a handball in the box provided the Pioneers with a penalty kick. Ally Smith took the shot for Malone’s lone score.

Taylor Stano (Fr., 5-7, Massillon, OH/Jackson) tallied the win in goal. She played all 90 minutes and made nine saves on 18 shots faced.

The Cavaliers continue their four-game home stand this Friday as they host Tiffin as part of Homecoming Weekend. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and is part of a doubleheader with the men playing Lake Erie afterwards.
