10.15.13 MEN'S GOLF: Cavs Finish Second By a Stroke at Phipps Memorial

(CANTON, Ohio) – The 2013 Phipps Memorial Tournament was about as close as it could get as three universities finished within two strokes of each other. Walsh and Malone both finished in a tie for first with team scores of 307, by the Pioneers won the event as a result of the fifth golfer on the team placing higher than the Cavaliers’. The event took place at Brookside Country Club.
Blake Foutty (Jr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) was strong once again for Walsh with a round of 74 (38-36). His scored put him in a tie for second place individually and was one stroke away from being tied with medalist Ben Lehrke from Mount Union. Brian James (Fr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) also carded a 74 (39-35), but was participating as an individual and wasn’t included in the team scoring for the Cavs.
Jeff Cockerham (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) and Brandon Shannon (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/Woodridge) both scored a 77 on the day. Eric Bowman (Jr., Alliance, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) shot a 79. Nick Altomare (So., Leetonia, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) scored and 81 as the fifth golfer for Walsh. The fifth golfer for Malone carded an 80 to take the team title.
Nick Colangelo (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) fired a 76 (38-38) to finish 7th. Zach Keylor (Fr., Barnesville, OH/St.Clairsville) tied for 15th with an 80 (42-38), Dean Miller (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) shot an 82 (43-39) and tied with Danny Krier (Jr., Massillon, OH/Central Christian) (40-42) for 21st place and Chuck Demchak (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) tied for 25th with an 84 (46-38). All played as individuals.
Mount Union finished two strokes back of Walsh and Malone with a 309.
