10.17.13 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Draw With Arrows 1-1

Women's Soccer, 2013-10-17

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Walsh and Ursuline needed extra time at Milazzo Field on a rainy Thursday night, but neither squad could add in another goal to draw 1-1. The Cavaliers are now 3-8-2 overall. The Arrows are now 9-5-1 on the season.

Ursuline controlled the tempo for most of the first half and were rewarded with a goal a third of the way into the game. Following a corner kick, the ball bounced back out to the left side where Anna Feitl sent the ball back into the box. Giuliana Pugliese was able to get a head on the ball and placed it into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead at 30:17. The score remained there going into the break.

Walsh regrouped in the second half and put more pressure on the visitors. Early in the second half, the Cavs were able to create a fast break opportunity as Rachel Rucker (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) and Emily Durina (So., Youngstown, OH/Austintown Fitch) connected to score the equalizer. Rucker received the ball near the top of the box on the right side and was able to pass the ball up to Durina. Durina then quickly fired a laser that shot past the goalie, hit the bottom of the crossbar, and into the goal to tie the game at 57:28.

The score didn’t change for the rest of the game, but both squads had great chances to score a game-winner. In the first overtime, Ursuline outshot the Cavs 4-0. Dani Shambaugh (Fr., Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), who entered the game in the second half, made three of her four saves to keep the game going. In the second overtime, Walsh probably had the best opportunity to win the game as a shot by Jessie Gearhart (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) went by the goalie, but an Arrows defender in front of the net was able to deflect the ball away with 17 seconds left in the match.

The Cavs return to conference action as they head just a few miles south to battle rival Malone on Saturday. The game is scheduled to kick-off at noon.
