10.19.12 WOMEN'S SOCCER: Conti's Goal Puts Cavs Over Tiffin

Women's Soccer, 2012-10-19

Walsh kicked off Homecoming Weekend in good fashion with another 1-0 shutout, this time at the expense of Tiffin, on a windy and rainy afternoon at Milazzo Field. The Cavaliers (8-4-2, 4-4-2) are now 6-1 in games decided by one goal with all six wins coming by shutout. The Dragons are now 5-7-2 overall and fall to 3-5-2 in the GLIAC.

After a scoreless first half, the Cavaliers scored their only goal as Kristen Conti (Fr., 5-8, Hartville, OH/Lake) took a pass from Erin Peskura (Fr., 5-4, Strongsville, OH/HS) from the left side of the field. Conti was waiting right in front of the net and was able to put the ball home for her first goal of the season at 46:22.

Tiffin had an excellent chance to score after lobbing a shot over goalkeeper Taylor Stano’s (Fr., 5-7, Massillon, OH/Jackson) head, but excellent defense by the backline of Erin Naumann (Sr., 5-1, Medina, OH/Highland), Kelly Sklenar (Sr., 5-3, Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney), and Lindsey Smith (Fr., 5-7, Massillon, OH/Jackson) were able to play the ball out and prevent the equalizer.

Stano once again recorded the shutout with five saves on 15 shots faced.

Walsh was wearing special pink jerseys that were auctioned off following the game. Money raised from the auction totaled $500 and will be donated to breast cancer research and patient care throughout North Canton.

The Cavs return to action on Sunday as they host the University of Findlay. It will be the final home game of the year and will serve as the opening game of a men’s and women’s doubleheader. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities preceding the game.
