10.20.12 FOOTBALL: Cavs Rout Tiffin; Dennison Closes in on Win # 200
(Canton, OH) Walsh (3-5, 2-5) scored its first first quarter touchdowns of the season, on its way to a 27-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Tiffin University (2-6, 1-6) on Homecoming. The win was number 199 the collegiate career for Head Coach Jim Dennison (199-136-2, 18th yr.). Dennison goes for number 200 against Lake Erie College next Saturday night at Fawcett Stadium at 6 pm.
Jack Dawson (Sr., Columbiana, OH/South Range) hit Darryl Gary (So., Fort Myers FL/South Fort Myers) for a 25-yard score on the opening drive of the game. It was Walsh’s first TD in the first quarter this season. After the two teams traded fumbles, Walsh capitalized as Justin Keith (So., Canton, OH/South) scored on a one-yard run to give Walsh a 14-0 first quarter lead. The Cavs would take the 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The Dragons only score of game was the only score of the third quarter when Seth Pekoe connected on a 27-yard field.
Walsh put the game away with a pair of fourth quarter scores. After Steve Smith (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) raced 27 yards to the Tiffin one-yard line, Dawson scored on a bootleg to increase the lead to 20-3. On the next possession, Jamaris Brown (So., Fort Myers, OH/Lehigh) jumped a route, and intercepted a pass and returned it 37 yards for the final score.
Walsh rushed for 189 yards, while holding the Dragons to 14 yards rushing. Keith rushed for 112 yards and Smith 67.
Tiffin’s Dan Pitts passed for 326 yards on 34 of 52, but could not reach pay-dirt.
Sir Taylor (Sr., Albany, NY/Lincoln Hall/Youngstown State) led the defense with 11 tackles and Chad Phillis (Fr., Monaca, PA/Central Valley) had 10. Andrew Roy (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) had 2.5 sacks and Cory Farcas (Jr., Hubbard, OH/HS) 2.0. The Cavs recorded eight sacks, just one shy of a team record.
