10.21.12 MEN'S SOCCER: Malone Trips Up Walsh 1-0

Men's Soccer, 2012-10-21

A late goal by Malone spoiled Senior Day for Walsh as the visitors won by a 1-0 count on a sunny Sunday afternoon.  The Cavaliers fall to 3-11 overall and 3-9 in the conference. The Pioneers are now 6-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the GLIAC.

Both teams played neck and neck for throughout the game and held each other scoreless in the first half. It wasn’t until the 81stminute that Malone broke the tie on a breakaway opportunity. Adam Sharpnack found Kelvin Aquino streaking up the middle of the field on a one-on-one chance with Frank Sanabria (So., 5-11, North Ridgeville, OH/Elyria Catholic) and stepped right and shot at the last second to score.

Sanabria played well throughout the game and made some crucial saves to keep Walsh even for most of the game. He made eight saves on 15 shots faced. The Cavaliers had their fair shot of scoring opportunities with seven shots on goal and 12 overall shots, but none could find the back of the net.

The Cavaliers will wrap up the regular season next weekend with two games on the road. They will play at Notre Dame College on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for the final GLIAC contest of the year. On Saturday, Walsh travels to Wheeling Jesuit to take on the Cardinals for a 2 p.m. bout.
