10.22.11 FOOTBALL: Offense Silent in 28-3 Loss to Wesley
(Canton, OH) Walsh fell to 2-6 on the season, and lost a chance for a winning season after losing 28-3 to visiting Wesley College (6-1) today. The Cavs are home at 7 pm next Saturday night to meet Taylor University.
The Cavs' offense could manage only three points and 176 yards of total offense against the NCAA lll tenth ranked Wolverines. Walsh scored first, and led 3-0 on Bo Beegle's (R-Fr., 5-9, 190, Beloit, OH/West Branch) 25-yard field goal at the 7:53 mark of the first quarter. The drive should have resulted in seven points, but Justin Keith's (6-2, 235 R-Fr., Canton, OH, OH/South) three-yard TD run was wiped out because of an illegal motion penalty.
Wesley got on the board at the 11:55 mark of the second quarter, on an eight-yard pass from Shane McSweeny to Sean McAndrew. The drive was keyed by a Walsh 15-yard penalty on third down that kept the drive alive. Wesley led 7-3 at the half.
Wesley added 14 points in the third quarter, as Askia Jahad scored on a 15-yard run and McSweeney scored on a one-yard, and led 21-3 heading into the final period.
The final score came when Dakevi Howard intercepted a Jim Shiplett (6-3, 199, Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.
Wesley outgained the Cavs 356 to 176. Keith led the Cavs with 64 yards rushing. The Cavs were 8-24 passing, with two interceptions for 65 yards. Robert Wigfall (5-10, 179, Jr., Youngstown, OH/Hubbard) caught four passes for 33 yards.
