10.25.13 MEN'S SOCCER: Slow Start Dooms Cavs in Loss to Storm

Men's Soccer, 2013-10-25

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Early defensive miscues hurt Walsh as Lake Erie scored two goals in the first seven minutes en route to a 4-1 victory in GLIAC action on a chilly Friday evening. The Storm (7-6-2, 6-6-1) clinched a playoff spot in the conference tournament with the win. The Cavaliers (5-9, 5-7) can still get in with a win in one of their final two games or a loss by Findlay.

Lake Erie’s first score came in the fourth minute at Ryan Gibson dibbled in from the left side along the end line and fired a shot in at Justin Nolan (Sr., Medina, OH/Highland/Ashland). The shot deflected off of Nolan and into the net just inside the near post at 3:33. Three minutes later, Cory Bucur took advantage of a loose ball in front of Nolan and put it in from five yards out to make it 2-0. The Storm kept surging and made it 3-0 after Alfred Majer’s scored following a failed clear attempt by the Cavs at 19:06.

Walsh’s lone score came when Evan Heiss (Fr., Dearborn, MI/Divine Child) scored his first goal of the year on an assist from Chris Lynch (Sr., Bellbrook, OH/HS). Lynch took control of the ball near midfield and passed it up to the right side of the box where Heiss slipped it by the goalie to the left side of the net to make it 3-1 at 32:54.

The Storm put the game out of reach with its final tally at 70:09

The Cavs will look to rebound as they travel to Tiffin on Sunday for a noon kickoff.
