10.6.12 FOOTBALL: Cavs Rout Malone for First GLIAC Win

(Canton, OH) Toba Olarewaju (Sr., Youngstown, OH/Christian) scored four touchdowns and rushed for 195 yards in Walsh’s 34-7 rout of rival Malone University (1-4, 1-4) at Fawcett Stadium tonight in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. The win was the first in GLIAC play for the Cavs, raising their conference record to 1-4, and their overall record to 2-4.  The loss also snapped Walsh’s four-game losing streak.

After a scoreless first quarter, Olarewaju scored the first of his four TD’s with a 40-yard run. Walsh would add two more scores in the quarter and led 21-0 at the half.  Jack Dawson (Sr., Columbiana, OH/South Range) scored on a four-yard run and Olarewaju on a one–yard run. 

Malone climbed back into the ballgame late in the third period when Will Szpor connected with Justin McLean for a 51-yard score. After the catch, McLean was charged with a personal foul, a play that would come back to haunt the Pioneers. After being forced to kickoff from the 20-yard line, Walsh setup shop on their 43-yard line. Olarewaju then raced 57 yards on first down for a score, and 17 seconds later Walsh led 27-7 with 46 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Olarewaju capped the big night with an eight-yard run early in the fourth.  He averaged 7.0 yards per carry.

Walsh totaled 361 yards total offense, while holding Malone to just 284 yards. The Pioneers averaged just 3.9 yards per play. The defense recovered three fumbles and had two interceptions.  Linebacker Cameron Trudell (So., Columbus, OH/Walnut Ridge) had 13 tackles.

Walsh travels to Ashland University (6-0) next Saturday. Kickoff is 1 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on TEAMLINE.
