10.7.12 MEN'S SOCCER: Cavs Soar Past Eagles 5-3

Men's Soccer, 2012-10-07

A high scoring affair broke out at Milazzo Field Sunday afternoon, but Walsh was on the positive end of a 5-3 decision over Ashland. The Cavaliers (3-8, 3-6) broke a five-game losing streak. The Eagles (7-3-1 5-3) were also just coming off of a 3-1 win over previously undefeated and No. 2 Gannon.

The Cavs offense got on the board early and scored often with four goals in the opening half. Chad Dickerhoof (Sr., 6-0, Alliance, OH/Marlington) provided the first goal after a pass from Darby Melville (So., 6-2, Newcastle, England/Gateshead) found him near the end line. Dickerhoof was able to put the hard-angle shot past the goalie for the early lead at 8:14.

Broc Sutek (Sr., 6-0, Minverva, OH/HS) made it 2-0 after he headed in a midfield pass from Adam Greenwood (Sr., 5-11, Blackpool, England/Lytham St. Annes) 12 minutes later. Chris Lynch (Jr., 6-2, Bellbrook, OH/HS) scored the first of two goals on the day following an assist from Dickerhoof on a free kick in the 31stminute.

Ashland eventually got on the board in the 34thminute after Keiichi Nguyen scored from inside the 8-yard box at 34:58. Walsh was able to answer as Jordan Semple (Sr., 5-7, North Canton, OH/GlenOak) took a pass from Sutek on the right side of the box, caught the goalie out from the net and was able to lob it over his head for a 4-1 lead just under four minutes before the half.

In the second half, Lynch added his second goal of the game on a double-assist from Kain Melville (So., 6-2, Newcastle, England/Gateshead) and Josh Habeck (Fr., 6-1, Uniontown Lake) at 62:43 to make it 5-1. Ashland didn’t go away despite the deficit and added two goals in the final 10 minutes to set up the 5-3 final.

The Cavaliers will attempt to keep momentum going forward as they travel to Ohio Dominican a week from today. The two teams played earlier this season with the Panthers taking a 2-1 win in double overtime. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
