11.1.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Vikings Defeat Cavs

(Cleveland, OH) Walsh fell 83-67 to Cleveland State University in an exhibition game at CSU’s Woodling Gym tonight.  Walsh opens the regular season on November 13 at home against Ohio Mid-Western College.

Walsh held its only lead of the game at 5-3 at 17:55 of the first half after Maggie Berry (6-0, Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) drilled a three-pointer.  The games last tie came at 5-5.  CSU shot 52% in the first half and led 43-28 at the break.  Honesty King (14) and Shalonda Winton (13) combined for 27 of the CSU’s 43 first half points.  Berry and Tracy Payne (5-5, Sr., Danville, OH/HS) had eight points each in the first half for the Cavs.  Walsh shot 33% in the opening stanza.

The Cavs played the Vikings nearly even in the final 20 minutes, being outscored 40-39. Walsh rallied early in the second half and cut the CSU lead to seven points at 49-42 at 15:18.  They would trim the CSU lead to six at 51-44 with 14:52 to play, but would get no closer.

Walsh shot 52% (15-29) in the second half to finish at 43% for the night.  Berry led Walsh with 18 points and seven rebounds.  She was 7-13 from the field and 3-6 from three-point.  Payne added 17 points and connected on 3-5 from long range.  They were the only two Cavaliers in double figures.

Shalonda Winton of CSU led all scorers with 26 points.
