Women's Soccer, 2013-11-01
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Walsh and Northern Michigan battled to a 1-1 draw as 110 minutes wasn’t enough for either team at Milazzo Field. The Cavaliers (4-9-3, 3-7-1) have now played in five overtime games and have come out even in the last two. The Wildcats (4-9-3, 4-4-3) are also no stranger to extra time as they have also played in five overtime games and also have drawn even in their past two.
The Cavs appeared to take control early as Kristen Conti (So., 5-8, Hartville, OH/Lake) scored on an assist from Jessie Gearhart (So., 5-9, Wadsworth, OH/HS) in the third minute. Gearhart was able to get a head on a ball to flick it to the left side of the box. Conti was there waiting and had to battle a Northern Michigan defender before rolling in a shot across the keeper and to the right side of the net for her third tally of the season.
The score remained 1-0 through halftime. Northern Michigan eventually tied it up midway through the second period. Ashley Katers scored the equalizer on the assist from Paula Hafner at 64:55. It was also Katers’ third goal of the year.
Michaella Stucky (So., 5-5, Medina, OH/HS) and Dani Shambaugh (Fr., 5-7, Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) split time between the pipes once again. Stucky started the game and made two saves on eight shots faced. Shambaugh came in for the second half and overtime periods to make six saves on 11 shots faced.
Northern Michigan outshot the Cavs 19-16 overall in the game. The Wildcats had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams were flagged four times for being offsides.
The Cavaliers return to action to wrap up the regular season against Michigan Tech this Sunday. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
