11.12.11 FOOTBALL: Cavs Rally at Quincy
(Quincy, IL) Walsh (5-6) rallied from a 13-0 first half deficit to win the season finale 27-20 at Quincy University (4-5) today. Walsh closes the season by winning their final three games.
Walsh trailed 13-0 when they went to work in the second quarter. Toba Olarewaju (5-10, 191, Jr., Youngstown, OH/Christian) scored on a two-yard run to get the Cavs on the board at the 11:07 mark of the second quarter. Walsh then tied the game on Olarewaju's six-yard run at 4:01. The Hawks blocked the point after, and the score was tied 13-13 at the half.
Quincy scored on a broken play to take a 20-13 lead in the third period. Walsh came back again, when Steve Smith raced 52 yards for a score when eight seconds left in the period to tie the game at 20-20 heading into the fourth quarter. Senior Pat Kane (6-2, 192, Sr., Bolivar, OH/Tusky Valley) then provided the play of the day when he intercepted at Quincy pass and returned it 26 yards for a score at the 14:48 mark. The Walsh defense did the rest to preserve the 27-20 win.
Olarewaju led all rushers with 100 yards. Steve Smith added 68 yards and Justin Keith (6-2, 235, R-Fr., Canton, OH, OH/South) 57 yards. The Cavs totaled 230 yards on the ground, while holding Quincy to 61 yards on the ground.
