11.16.13 FOOTBALL: Cavs Can't Hold Early Lead in Season Finale at Findlay
(FINDLAY, Ohio) Walsh (3-8, 3-6) could not capitalize on an early 14-3 lead, and lost 49-28 at the University of Findlay (8-3, 6-3) in the season finale for both teams. The GLIAC loss finishes the Cavs' season at 3-6 in conference play.
On the strength of two Jason Fracassa (Sr., Sterling Hts., MI/Utica Stevenson/Northwood) first half TD passes, Walsh jumped to a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter. Fracassa connected with Justin Keith (Jr., Canton, OH/South) for a 13-yard scoring play in the first quarter and with Jerald Robinson (Jr., Canton, OH/South/Michigan) early in the second period on another 13-yard strike.
Findlay would cut the lead to 14-9 on Anthony Linnear’s seven-yard run after the Robinson TD to trim the lead to 14-9. Verlon Reed then got behind the Cavs’ defense and caught a 49-yard TD pass from Devontae Payne to give Findlay their first lead at 15-14.
Walsh took a gamble, which failed, late in the half that led to the Oilers final score of the half. Walsh failed on a fourth and one from the Findlay 42-yard line with over a minute to go in the half which the Oilers turned into points when Lloyd Henry caught at 17-yard TD pass from Payne to give the home team a 21-14 halftime lead.
Findlay then recovered a Walsh onside kick to start the second half, which was turned into points when Demetrius Trapp scored on a three-yard run to give UF a 28-14 lead.
Disaster struck Walsh early on the next possession when Steve Smith (Sr., Norton, OH/HS) fumbled on second down and Findlay’s Zach Kinninger scooped up the loose ball and ran 23 yards to pay-dirt to extend the lead to 35-14.
In a span of six minutes and thirty seconds Findlay turned a 15-14 lead into a 35-14 lead.
The teams would then trade two scores for the 49-28 final.
Aaron Male (R-Fr., Akron, OH/Ellet) scored on a one-yard run, and Smith scored from six yards out. For Male, it was his eighth rushing TD of the season. Male rushed for 81 yards on 15 carries and Smith 76 yards on 19 carries. Fracassa passed for 186 yards and two scores.
