11.17.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Shoot Down Arrows for Opening Day Win

Walsh (1-0) opened the season with a 63-50 non-conference win over Ursuline College (0-3). The Cavs are now idle until November 29, when they open GLIAC play at home against Northern Michigan University (8 pm).
Despite shooting well early in the game, Walsh fell behind 16-11 with 11:07 to play. They would rebound and take the lead for good at 23-21 on a Lydia Corle (5-9, Fr., North Canton, OH/Green) jumper at the 6:03 mark. The Cavs would stretch the lead to 10 points, but would lead 36-30 at halftime. Tara Gallupe (6-0, Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) scored nine points off the bench in the first half and Maggie Berry (6-0, Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) had six points and five rebounds. Walsh shot 54% (15-28) and out-rebounded the Arrows 20-11.
Despite cooling off to the tune of 41% from the floor in the second half the Cavs were never challenged, and led by as many as 18 points (60-42) with 4:01 to play.
Corle, in her collegiate debut, led Walsh with 15 points. She shot 6-10 from the field and 3-3 from the line, while adding five rebounds. Gallupe finished with nine points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Kassidy Hardgrove (5-5, So., Minerva, OH/HS/Shawnee State) added nine points off the bench and Audrey Badovick (5-5, So., Norwalk, OH/HS) had eight points.
Ursuline’s Laura Campbell led all scorers with 17 points. Katie Cappello added 14 points.
Walsh out-rebounded Ursuline 42-26 and held the visitors to just 36% (17-47) from the floor.
