1.18.14 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Hot-shooting Storm Derails Walsh

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - Walsh had it’s six-game win streak snapped at the hands of Lake Erie by a score of 85-74 in GLIAC action Saturday afternoon. The Cavs fall to 11-3 overall and 7-3 in the conference while the Storm (8-8, 5-5) are now winners of three straight.
Lake Erie got off to a hot start with an 8-0 lead in the first two minutes and made its first five shots from the game. Walsh came back within a possession at 12-10 after a 3-pointer by Brad DuPont (Sr., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson), the the Cavs couldn’t capitalize and trailed for the rest of the first half. At the break, Lake Erie led 37-31.
The Cavs made their best run in the first part of the second half. Consecutive 3-pointers by Jesse Hardin (So., 6-1, Warren, OH/Harding) cut the deficit to one at 40-39 with 16:31 left in the game, and a basket by Hrvoje Vucic (Sr., 7-1, Split, Croatia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) tied the game at 46-46 with 13:15 to go.
Unfortunately for the Cavs, it was the closest they could get and was the only tie of the game. The Storm took control with a 27-11 run and held off a late Walsh comeback attempt.
The Storm were hot from the field with 54 percent of its shots made on 32-of-59 attempts. Walsh was at a 43 percent clip on 27 made out of 63 attempts. Both teams made 10 shots from behind the arc.
Hardin led the Cavs with 24 points after he made 8-of-17 from the field with six 3-pointers. He was also strong defensively with seven rebounds. Trey Fletcher (Fr., 6-6, Ironton, OH/HS) added 16 points. DuPont scored 12 and Vucic tallied 11 to round out Walsh’s double-figure scorers.
The Cavaliers will return to Alumni Arena when they host Ohio Dominican this Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
