11.19.13 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Win Overtime Thriller over Tiffin

(North Canton, OH) Walsh won its fourth straight game, and improved to 7-4 in the GLIAC South, after defeating Tiffin University (6-11, 3-9) 95-89 in an overtime thriller at Alumni Arena. The win was the third straight come-from-behind win at home for the Cavs, improves the Cavs to 11-4 overall, and keeps them in second place one-half game behind co-leaders University of Findlay and Hillsdale College. The Cavs host Findlay next Thursday (1.24) at 6 pm at Alumni Arena and travel to Hillsdale next Saturday (1.26) for 1 pm game. Both games will be broadcast live on WNPQ, 95.9 FM.
Walsh's balanced scoring helped them hold a 36-35 halftime advantage. The Cavs shot well early and built a couple of 11-point leads. Tiffin then caught fire from three-point and climbed back into the ball game. Eric Roby had three 3-pointers and scored 13 points. Joe Graessle added 11. Kenny Kornowski (6-9, Sr., Marshallville, OH/Smithville) and Rian Burrell (6-3,So., Zanesville, OH/HS) each scored eight points. Walsh shot 57% from the field in the first half.
Tiffin turned the tables on the Cavs in the second half as they came out firing. The Dragons used a 13-3 run to start the half and built an 11-point lead at 48-37 with 15:33 to play. Behind the relentless scoring of Eric Roby and Joe Graessle, the Dragons maintained the advantage and led 66-57 with 8:32 to play.
The Cavs began to whittle at the lead and trailed 68-64 after a Burrell three-pointer with 4:58 left. The Cavs finally cut the lead to 70-69 at 3:29 on a Jeff Copeland free throw and finally tied the game at 71 at 2:42 on a Davonte Beard (6-2, So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary/Siena).
Tiffin took a three-point lead on a Roby three at 75-72 with 1:06 left. Walsh cut the lead to one on a Kornowski jumper at 75-74 with 55 seconds.
Walsh tied the game at 75 on a Copeland free throw, but fell back 77-75 on two Roby free throws with 15 seconds. Brad DuPont (6-0, Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) then scored on a drivng layup with 11 seconds to play to tie the game at 77. The contest went to overtime when Tiffin's Isaiah Twine missed a jumper as time expired.
Tiffin led 80-79 with 3:33 in the extra session when DuPont hit a three to give the Cavs an 82-80. Tiffin's Graessle hit two free throws to knot the game at 82 wit 2:53.
Walsh took the lead for good on two DuPont free throws and outscored the Dragons 11-7 the rest of the way.
Kornowski paced the Cavs with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Burrell added 21 points and Beard and DuPont each had 14.
Tiffin's Joe Graessle led all scorers with 37 points. Eric Roby added 26.
