11.4.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Flyers Take Off in Second Half

(Dayton, OH) The University of Dayton rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Walsh 81-63 in an exhibition game at UD Arena. Walsh is now idle until they open the season, at home, on November 12 against Allegheny College at 7 pm at Alumni Arena.
Walsh led by as many as ten points (33-23, 35-25) in the first half, shooting 54% (14-26) from the floor, and 64% (7-11) from three-point in building a 35-27 lead at the break. Davonte Beard (6-2, So., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary/Siena) and Kenny Kornowski (6-9, Sr., Marshallville/ OH/Smithville) each had eight first half points. The Cavs held the Flyers to just 33% (12-36) from the field and limited them to 1-12 from three-point.
The second half was a different story as the Flyers came out of gate on fire outscoring the Cavs 10-1 in the first 1:58 to regain the lead at 38-36. The game would feature two more ties (38-38, 40-40), before the Dayton took the lead for good at 42-40 with 16:52 to play on a jumper by Josh Benson.
Dayton would extend the lead to 14 points at 59-45 with 11:22 to play when the Cavs regrouped. Walsh would go on a 5-0 run to trim the lead to 59-52 with 7:11 to play. The Cavs kept close, and trailed by seven (63-56) with 6:04 to play, when the Flyers used a 6-0 run to put the game away.
After shooting poorly in the first half, Dayton caught fire in the second half connecting on 23-32 for 72%, while the Cavs cooled off shooting 35% on 10-29. Dayton owned a significant advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Cavs 47-26.
Beard played a solid game and led the Cavs with 16 points, connecting on 5-7 from the field and 2-3 from three-point. Kornowski added 14 points and Jesse Hardin (6-1, Fr., Warren, OH/Harding) tallied 13 off the bench. Brad DuPont (6-0, JR., Massillon, OH/Jackson) had nine points and six assists.
Dayton's Josh Benson led all scorers with 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
