11.9.13 FOOTBALL: Cavs Overpowered by Glenville State Pioneers
(GLENVILLE, W.Va) – Glenville State’s ground attack led it to a 33-21 victory over visiting Walsh in a non-conference affair on a sunny afternoon in the Mountain State at Morris Stadium. The Pioneers (5-5) scored three rushing touchdowns and were led by a 216-yard performance by Rahmann Lee. The Cavaliers are now 3-7 on the year.
The first quarter featured back-and-forth action as both teams combined to score on over half of the possessions in the first 15. Glenville State scored first on an eight-yard-run by Derek McRae. The drive was set up after the Pioneers recovered a fumble punt return on the Walsh-22. The extra point attempt was no good to keep the game at 6-0.
The Cavaliers immediately answered as Matt Matuska (R-Fr., 6-0, Akron, OH/SVSM) returned a kickoff to the endzone for the second consecutive week. This time he was 92 yards out. Michael Dudics’ (Jr., 5-10, Doylestown, OH/Chippewa) extra-point was good to give Walsh its only lead of the game at 7-6. After a 21-yard touchdown pass from Steffen Colon to Delvon Purvis made it 12-7, Dudics added a 36-yard field goal to bring Walsh within two to close out the first quarter scoring.
The second quarter belonged to the Pioneers as Colon and Purvis hooked up again for another touchdown pass. Colon added a 28-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 26-10 going into halftime.
Dudics added another field goal from 38 yards out to cut the deficit to 26-13, but Glenville seemingly put the game away with a 68-yard touchdown run by Lee to push the hosts’ lead back to 20.
Aaron Male (R-Fr., 5-11, Akron, OH/Ellet) scored from two yards out and Brody Tonn (Fr., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Washington) converted a two-point conversion pass to Krishawn Hogan (Fr., 6-2, Indianapolis, IN/Warren Central) to set up the final score of 33-21.
The Cavaliers will return to conference action and close out the 2013 season when they travel to Findlay on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
