12.1.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Michigan Tech Too Much For Cavs

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – Michigan Tech proved to be too tough for Walsh as the visiting Huskies won by a score of 80-54 Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers fall to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Michigan Tech improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC.
Walsh played strong and held the lead in the early going. The Cavs’ last lead came after a jumper by Lydia Corle (Fr., 5-9, North Canton, OH/Green) which made the score 9-8 with 14:09 left in the first half. However, the Huskies followed up with a 10-2 run. Walsh made a run of its own shortly after, but could not get any closer than three.
The Cavaliers had troubles on the offensive end as they made only 20 percent of their shots from the field in the second half and 27.9 percent for the game. They were also beaten on the glass as Michigan Tech held the rebounding advantage 49-39.
Tracy Payne (Sr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) led the team with 15 points, with 13 coming in the first half, on 5-of-11 shooting. Maggie Berry (Jr., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) and Tara Gallupe (Jr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) both added nine points each.
Walsh will next be in action this Thursday as the Cavaliers take on Northwood at 8 p.m. They will stay in Michigan and take on Lake Superior State a week from today with a tip-off time of 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on 95.9 FM WNPQ.
