12.20.11 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Fall to Southwestern College 68-61

Walsh dropped a tough contest to visiting Southwestern College (KS) by a count of 68-61 Tuesday evening in the final home game of the calendar year. The Cavaliers drop to 6-5 with the loss, while the Moundbuilders improve to 8-5.
Southwestern led by as many as 11 in the first half before the Cavs cut the deficit to four by halftime with the score set at 30-26. Walsh eventually tied the game at 51-51 on a pair of free throws by Tanisha Lawler (Fr., 5-7, Euclid, OH/Hathaway Brown) with 7:15 to play. The Cavs took a short one-point lead at 59-58 on another free throw by Mandi Swickard (Sr., 6-1, Alexandria, OH/Northridge) with 3:59 to play in regulation. Southwestern answered with a three pointer to regain the lead. Walsh tied the game once more after that, but the Moundbuilders scored the final seven points of the game while holding the Cavs scoreless for the final 3:12.
Southwestern made 11 three-pointers on 35 attempts and shot 31.3 percent from the field. The Cavs shot 45.1 percent from the field, but hurt themselves from the foul line, shooting 13-24 from the charity stripe.
Daniella Ciccarone (So., 5-8, Quakertown, PA/Quakertown Community) led the team in scoring with 18 points on 6-11 shooting with eight rebounds. Swickard added 15 points, six boards, four assists and two blocks. Kristi Yoder (Sr., 6-1, Millersburg, OH/Hiland) led the team with 12 rebounds.
The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 28 when they travel to the University of Northwest Ohio to take on the Racers. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
