12.8.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Walsh Falls at Lake Superior

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) Walsh (5-2, 2-2) lost an 11-point first half lead and fell 71-65 at Lake Superior State University (2-5, 0-4) today in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. The back-to-back losses are the first for the Cavs since 2006-07, and the first in the last 142 games. The Cavs are now idle until Monday, December 17, when they host Saginaw Valley State in a GLIAC game at Alumni Arena at 5:30 pm.
Kenny Kornowski (6-9, Sr., Smithville, OH/Marshallville) scored 13 points in the first half, as Walsh built a 32-27 lead at the break. Walsh built an early 23-12 lead when the Lakers hit back-to-back three's get back into the game. Hrvoje Vucic (7-1, Jr., Split, Crotia/Faust Vrancic/Valparaiso) had six first half rebounds.
The second half was back and forth with LSSU taking their first lead at 40-39 early in the second half. Walsh regrouped and used a 10-0 run to lead 49-40 at the 12:02 mark. Behind the three-point shooting of Derek Billing, LSSU climbed back into the game. The Cavs held their last lead at 64-63 with 3:38 to play on a Jeff Copeland (6-5, So., Toledo, OH/ St. John’s) free throw. The Lakers took the lead for good at 66-65 on a Jorddan Myrick free throw with 1:19 to play.
Kornowski continued his strong play with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jesse Hardin (6-1, FR., Warren, OH/Harding) provided a second half spark and paced Walsh with 18 points. He connected on three second half three-pointers. Copeland added ten points off the bench.
LSSU’s Derek Billing led all scorers with 26 points.
