Counseling Honor Society Receives Ouotstanding Chapter Award
Alpha Mu Chapter honored at ceremony in Montreal, Canada in April

North Canton, Ohio, January 31, 2006 - Walsh University's Alpha Mu Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international Counseling Academic and Professional Honor Society, was recently selected as the winner of that Society's Outstanding Chapter Award.

"Our committee's job of selecting a winner was difficult, and the Walsh Chapter was recognized for this achievement through their hard work and efforts," said Dr. Susan A. S. Adams, Chi Sigma Iota Awards Committee Co-Chair.

This is the second time the Walsh University chapter has received the award - the first was in 2001.

"Our chapter made a commitment to assist graduate students in becoming professional counselors and then began the Sandra Lopez-Baez scholarship endowment. We are proud to have contributed some $7,000 to that endowment, and, additionally, to have awarded the $1,000 scholarship each year for several years to a Counseling and Human Development graduate student," said Dr. Linda Barclay, faculty advisor.

The Walsh University Alpha Mu chapter also has also assisted graduate students with stipends to support their presentations at state and national Counseling Association conferences.

Chi Sigma Iota is the international honor society for students, professional counselors and counselor educators; it was initially established at Ohio University in 1985.  Its mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling.

There are currently 272 chapters, 10,639 active members, and 47,068 initiated members as of November 30, 2005.  The Alpha Mu chapter was organized at Walsh University in 1986.

"We are so honored and excited to have Alpha Mu at Walsh University recognized as the recipient of the 'Outstanding Chapter Award of Chi Sigma Iota,'" said Alice M. Cleary, M. A. PCC-S, LICDC, Alpha Mu President 2005-2006. "This group works very diligently and creatively to contribute to improving the quality of counseling in our community. Our faculty advisor, Dr. Linda Barclay and CHD faculty member, Dr. Holly Hartwig Moorhead, have been inspiring our chapter members to become more nationally active, and we look at this as a peak professional growth experience for us all."

The Walsh University chapter will receive its award at the Chi Sigma Iota Awards Ceremony during the American Counseling Association Convention in Montreal, Canada on Saturday, April 1, 2006.
