Men's Basketball, 2012-02-11

Walsh fell on the road to Cedarville by a score of 71-55 before a packed house of 2,493 at the Callan Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. It was a tale of two halves as the Cavaliers (20-5) came out shooting well in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets’ (16-7) defense came alive in the second.

The Cavaliers led for the majority of the first half and made 52 percent of their shots from the field during the first 20 minutes. After Cedarville scored the first points of the game, Walsh reeled off eight-straight points to control the momentum. The Cavs led by as many as eight, but the Yellow Jackets remained within reach. With about six minutes to go in the first half, Cedarville went on an 8-0 run to regain the lead at 28-26. The two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the half with the hosts heading into the locker room up 32-31 at halftime.

Walsh started the second half similar to the first with a Rian Burrell (Fr., 6-3, Zanesville, OH/HS) basket to regain the lead. Brad DuPont (So., 6-0, Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) followed that up with a layup to make the score 35-32. After the two teams exchanged baskets, the Jackets went on an 18-4 run to take control of the game.

Cedarville’s lead grew to as many as 17 and shot 60.9 percent from the field in the second half. Meanwhile, Walsh made only three field goals in the last 17 minutes of the game and shot 26.1 percent in the second half. The Jackets shot 53.8 percent from the field for the game.

Burrell led the Cavaliers with 14 points on 5-11 shooting and also had a team-high seven rebounds. L.J. Sutton (Sr., 6-7, Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) added 12 points on 5-6 from the floor. Cameron Mitchell (So., 6-4, Cincinnati, OH/Taft) was the third and final Walsh player to reach double figures with 11 points.

The Cavs return to action on Tuesday for the nightcap of a doubleheader at Roberts Wesleyan. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
