2.11.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cedarville Pulls Away From Walsh In Second Half
Women's Basketball, 2012-02-11
The Cavaliers fell to Cedarville by a score of 67-48 on the road in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon. Walsh (13-14) played with the Yellow Jackets (15-7) close for the first half of play, but Cedarville pulled away in the second half with strong defense.
Walsh held the lead a few times in the first half, but the hosts were able to answer almost every basket by the Cavs.
Walsh’s largest lead came at 11-7 with 14:36 to go in the first half after Maggie Berry (So., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) hit three consecutive shots, the first of which was a three to tie the game. Cedarville proceeded to tie the game on back-to-back lay-ups before a pair of free throws by Tracy Payne (Jr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) gave the Cavs the lead once again at 13-11. The Yellow Jackets answered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead.
The Cavs took their final lead of the night on a three-pointer by Emily Taylor (Fr., 5-6, Elyria, OH/Elyria Catholic) that made the score 22-21 before Cedarville answered with a jumper and a pair of free throws. Cedarville held a 30-27 advantage heading into the locker room.
The difference in the game came in the second half following a Kristi Yoder (Sr., 6-1, Millersburg, OH/Hiland) jumper made the game 39-34 with 15:53 left to play. Cedarville then started a 20-0 run over the next 7:50. The Yellow Jackets eventually led by as many as 29 before Walsh scored the game’s final 10 points. The Cavs shot 26.9 percent in the second half.
Defensively, Cedarville didn’t allow the Cavaliers to have a double-digit scorer. Walsh did have 11 players reach the scoring column with Payne pacing the offense with nine points. Tara Gallupe (So., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) added eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The Cavaliers return to action this Tuesday when they travel to Roberts Wesleyan College for the final game of three consecutive contests on the road and the final regular season road game. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
