Women's Basketball, 2014-02-13

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - When these two teams met in North Canton three weeks ago, Ohio Dominican edged Walsh by four points. It must have felt a little like deja vu for the Cavaliers as they were narrowly defeated once again by a score of 72-68. Walsh is now 8-15 overall and 4-13 in the GLIAC while ODU improves to 10-12 overall and 7-11 in the conference.

The game was once again closely contested throughout the 40 minutes as neither team held a lead larger than nine points. That margin belonged to Walsh when went up 43-34 after a steal and layup by Jalynn Graham (Fr., 5-5, Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) with 15:48 left on the clock in the second half. The Panthers answered with six-straight points to get back in the game.

ODU eventually took the lead on a 3-pointer by Melissa Scherpenberg that made the score 50-49. Kacee Hockenberry gave the Panthers a three-point lead, but Kelsey Funderburgh (So., 5-7, North Lewisburg, OH/Triad/Morehead State) tied the game with a 3-pointer of her own. It sparked a small 7-0 run that put Walsh up for the last time in the game. A pair of Funderburgh free-throws also tied the game at 60-60 one final time for the Cavs, but the Maroon and Gold couldn’t get over the hump to regain the lead.

In the final minute, the Cavaliers came within two after Graham hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to make the score 70-68, but Hockenberry made her next to foul shots after Walsh was forced to foul to set up the final score.

Tara Gallupe (Sr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) kept Walsh in the game and was a force underneath with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. She was 7-of-16 from the field and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Graham added 21 on a nice night were she was 8-of-12 from the field. Funderburgh scored 19 points to round out the double-figure scorers.

Despite Gallupe’s double-double, the Cavs had trouble keeping ODU off the boards as the Panthers out-rebounded Walsh by a 52-37 margin. Scherpenberg led the way with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Walsh returns home for its final two home contests of the year. First up is Tiffin which will enter Alumni Arena on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
