2.14.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Sink Raiders 66-51
Men's Basketball, 2012-02-14
(Rochester, N.Y.) - Walsh used some hot shooting from beyond the arc to down Roberts Wesleyan College 66-51 on the road Tuesday evening. The Cavs (21-5, 9-2) hit 11 three-pointers in the game and barely let the Raiders (8-18, 4-7) see the lead all night.
Except for the Raiders’ initial basket which put the hosts up 3-2 less than a minute into the game, the Cavaliers led the entire way as they won their fourth game in five contests.
Ryan Vanderhorst (So., 6-3, New Knoxville, OH/HS) had the hot hand as he came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19 points. He missed the first shot he took, but then went on a rampage as he sunk his other seven shots in the game. That included a perfect 5-of-5 from outside the arc. His first three gave the Cavs a 27-19 lead in the midst of an 8-0 run in the first half.
After another Vanderhorst three made the score 48-40, Roberts Wesleyan made its strongest run of the night and scored three consecutive baskets to trim Walsh’s lead to two. The Raiders didn’t get any closer, however, as Ron Kinney (Sr., 6-7, Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) answered the run with a three-pointer of his own that sparked a 13-2 run by the Cavs to pull away.
Kinney shot well in his own right as he made 6-of-9 overall that included three 3-pointers for 15 points. Rian Burrell (Fr., 6-3, Zanesville, OH/HS) also scored in double figures with 11 points for the Cavaliers.
Overall, Walsh shot 51 percent from the floor and 55 percent from three-point range. The Cavaliers led 37-30 at the half.
The Cavaliers return home this Thursday as they host Wilberforce. It will be Walsh’s final game as a member of the American Mideast Conference. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. following the women’s game.
