2.14.13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs' Second Half Rally Comes Up Short Against ODU

Women's Basketball, 2013-02-14

It wasn’t a sweet Valentine’s Day for Walsh as Ohio Dominican was able to get a revenge win by a 64-56 count in Alumni Arena. The Cavaliers fall to 7-14 overall and 4-13 in the GLIAC, while the Panthers now improve to 7-14 overall and 4-14 in the conference.

The Panthers led for a majority of the game, but the Cavaliers made a strong run in the second half to give Ohio Dominican a scare. After they trailed 32-23 at the break, Walsh went on a 9-0 run to tie the game in a span of 3:23. Just a bit later, the Cavs took their first lead since the game’s opening points on a jumper by Tracy Payne (Sr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) that made it 34-33 with 14:57 remaining in the game.

Walsh couldn’t keep the momentum up as Ohio Dominican answered with a 12-2 run to regain the lead for good. The closest the Cavs got the rest of the way was after a pair of Maggie Berry (Jr., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) free throws that made it 50-44 with 6:55 left in the game.

Payne led the Cavs with 15 points, all of which came in the second half. After a cold first half where she missed on five shots from the field, Payne was able to come out and make 6-of-11 in the last 20 minutes. Berry finished with 14 points with 10 tallied in a strong first half.

Walsh returns to action on the road at Tiffin on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on 95.9 FM WNPQ.
