2.16.12 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Capture Share of AMC Crown with 84-45 Win over Wilberforce
Men's Basketball, 2012-02-16
(North Canton, OH) Walsh (22-5, 10-2) won at least a share of the American Mideast Conference championship with an 84-45 drubbing of Wilberforce University (11-18, 7-4) tonight. If Daemen College loses to Point Park University on Saturday, the Cavs will win the regular crown outright. Walsh has captured at least share, or won the AMC title outright in each of the last eight years, a conference record. Tonight’s game was the final AMC game the Cavs will play, as they will play a NCAA ll schedule in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) next year. Walsh is on the road next Wednesday at Urbana University at 7:30pm, and then plays Notre Dame College at home on the 25th in the regular season finale.
Walsh trailed just once tonight, at 3-2, in the games’ first minute. Walsh did practically every right in the first half in building a 47-21 halftime lead. They shot 52% (17-33) from the field and 56% (5-9) from three-point in taking the bite out of the Bulldogs. Ron Kinney (6-7, Sr., Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) tallied 11 points, with Cameron Mitchell (6-4, So., Cincinnati, OH/Taft) adding 8 and Rian Burrell (6-3, Fr., Zanesville, OH/HS) 9.
The Cavs were never challenged in the second half, and led by as many as 45 points (71-26) with 9:56 to play.
Kinney led the balanced attack with a game-high 17 points. He also added seven rebounds. Mitchell and L. J. Sutton (6-7, Sr., Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) scored 12 points each, with Burrell and Ryan Vanderhorst (6-3, So., New Knoxville, OH/HS) tallying 11 points apiece. Mitchell grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, with Sutton adding eight. Jeff Copeland (6-5, Fr., Toledo, OH/St. John’s Jesuit) also added eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.
After a season-high 19 turnovers at Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday, the Cavs took good care of the ball with just seven turnovers. They also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 44-42.
Terrance Morgan led Wilberforce with 13 points. The Bulldogs were playing without injured starters Chris Olafioye and Ron Hightower. Wilberforce beat the Cavs 82-77 at Wilberforce on January 24.
