2.2.13 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Kornowski Paces Cavs in 65-55 Win at Malone

(Canton, OH) Before a packed house at Osborne Hall, Walsh (13-5, 9-5) came away with a 65-55 decision over Malone University (11-8, 8-7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division game. The win moves the Cavs to within a half game of first place in the GLIAC South behind the University of Findlay (13-6, 10-5) who lost at Hillsdale College today. The Cavs have won two straight games and five of their last six. Walsh and Malone will meet again on March 2, the season finale for both teams, when they play for the Mayor's Cup at Walsh.
Walsh came out of the gate red hot and raced to a 19-9 lead in the first seven minutes. Kenny Kornowoski (6-9, Sr., Marshallville, OH/Smithville) scored 12 first half points, and Rian Burrell (6-3, So., Zanesville, OH/HS) 9, as the Cavs led 36-29 at the half. Jeff Copeland (6-5, So., Toledo, OH/St. John's Jesuit) had 8 points and 8 rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
Walsh maintained the lead throughout the second half, with Malone getting no closer than six points. Walsh finally extended the lead to 13 points on a Burrell three-ball at 58-45 with 3:35 to play.
Kornowski finished with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds. He was 9-14 from the floor and 6-6 from the line. Copeland also had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, to go with 5 blocks and 3 assists. Burrell chipped in 14 points.
Isiah Elliott (6-1, Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Cory Veldhuizen (6-4, Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) led Malone with 17 points each. Elliott had to leave the game in the second due to an injury and returned to the floor on crutches.
For Walsh, the win was the 26th in the last 29 meetings with Malone. Walsh leads the all-time series 66-40 and has also posted 55 wins in the last 73 meetings since 1982.
The Cavs are back in action on Thursday, when they travel to Ashland University for a GLIAC game at 5:30 pm. The game will be broadcast live on 95.9 FM, WNPQ.
