2.20.14 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Edge Oilers On Senior Night

Women's Basketball, 2014-02-20

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – The seniors went out with a bang in their final regular season home game with a nail-biting 86-83 victory over Findlay on Thursday evening. With the win, the Cavaliers are now 10-15 overall and 6-13 in the conference. The Oilers fall to 11-13 overall and 8-12 in the GLIAC.

After Tara Gallupe (Sr., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) hit a pair of free throws to pull the Cavs within one, fellow senior Maggie Berry (6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) drained a 3-pointer to give Walsh a 78-76 lead with 2:11 to go in the game. It was a big momentum swing as it gave the Cavaliers the lead for good after not seeing the lead for the majority of the second half.

Berry eventually hit another jumper to put the Maroon and Gold up 82-78, but Findlay answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play after Clara Geiger scored a basket and made the eventual free throw after a foul by Jalynn Graham (Fr., 5-5, Columbus, OH/Central Crossing) with 11 seconds left.

Findlay was then forced to foul and sent Kelsey Funderburgh (So., 5-7, North Lewisburg, OH/Triad/Morehead State) to the line. She made the first and missed the second, but Graham was able to pull down the rebound. After a timeout, Funderburgh found herself at the line where she sunk both foul shots. The Oilers came back with a layup to make the score 85-83 with six seconds left, but time ran out as they Funderburgh was sent to the line again and made the back end to set up the final score with a second left.

Funderburgh finished with a game-high 21 points and was one board away from a double-double. Berry and Gallupe had impressive games as well in their final home game with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Rachael Trujillo (So., 5-8, Cleveland, OH/Westlake) added 14.

Walsh controlled the glass in dominating fashion with a 56-31 advantage over Findlay.

The Cavaliers now wrap up the seasons with three consecutive games on the road. The first game will see Walsh return to Michigan to take on Hillsdale on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
