2.21.14 SOFTBALL: Bondoni One-hits Hiwassee In Season Opener; Cavs Fall to Truman
(JACKSON, Tenn.) – Walsh was dominating in its first game of the season with a 7-0 win over Hiwassee College at the Union University Softball Classic. The Cavaliers (1-0) received a masterful outing from Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) who struck out a career-high 13 in the win.
Bondoni was one out away from her first no-hitter, but a single to left with two outs in the sixth ended the bid. She allowed only two walks in the complete game shutout.
On the offensive end, she received a strong team effort. Eryn Simon (Sr., Oregon, OH/Clay) led the charge with three hits and two RBI. Chelsy Testa (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Rachel Dedinsky (Sr., Cyahoga Falls, OH/SVSM) also added two RBI in the game.
Walsh struck early with four runs in the first three innings. Anna Fach (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/John Carroll) and Testa both scored in the first after reaching on a single and double, respectively. Anna Anderson (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) scored in the second and Sam Troxell (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS/Youngstown State) scored in the third. The Cavaliers added single runs in each of the last three innings.
In the second game of the day, Walsh lost by a score of 10-1 in five innings to Truman State after giving up nine runs in the third and fourth frames. The Cavs led briefly after Troxell led off with a triple down the left field line before being brought home by Testa’s single to left field in the first inning. The Bulldogs eventually tied the game in the bottom of the frame.
Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) took the loss after she gave up five runs on three hits and three walks with two strike outs in 2.1 innings.
The Cavs will be in action again tomorrow against Truman State at 9 a.m. before taking on host Union at 1 p.m.
